‘Ode in Memory of Alan Seeger…’ this Memorial day and Decorations day.

This year, again, I will be honoring the genius of Poet, Soldier and Heroic Soul, Alan Seeger.  On Memorial day / Decorations day,  I will read : ‘Ode to the Memory of the American Volunteers fallen for France’ by Alan Seeger.

This piece was to have been read in front of the statue of Lafayette and Washington in Paris on decorations day May 30th, 1916, by Alan Seeger.  Unfortunately his discharge papers were lost or delayed and May 30th stil found him mired in the worst trench warfare of war.  Alan didn’t make this rendezvous, but kept his word on another.  This Ode is made all the more personal and poignant in that in just a few weeks he would be among their ‘glorious ranks’, an American Volunteer fallen for France, and allotted ‘that rare privilege of dying well.’ I have this entire Ode, all five pages, committed to my memory and I will read this Ode in honor of Alan.

It amazes me, just how few people even know of Alan Seeger.  Even French American Literary people have had to admit they were surprised they never have heard of Alan. It amazes me also that a book of War poetry from 1914-1918 and not one Poem, one line,or one mention of the genius of Alan Seeger. How can this be? They even have a chapter on France, America and ‘those fallen’, the exact subject, place and time of Alan Seeger’s War Poetry. Like I said, nothing in this vein of history can be considered complete without his story and his Poetry.   Others may be unaware or negligent, but I will be honoring Alan’s Memory, and Respect shall be served and received with warm hearts of gratitude for this genius Poet, Soldier and Heroic Soul.

Cheers!
